A few signatures later, Bhanu had officially landed himself a mortgage. It took exactly two weeks for the process to begin and conclude. His mortgage providers made him the offer, accepted his application, transferred the money, and the deal was done. The paperwork and legal jargon were daunting, but clearly not insurmountable. And at the time, getting a fixed mortgage at 5.99% was a smart idea. Now that we’re in this huge economic downturn, the interest rate has dramatically fallen and Bhanu is kicking himself a bit. But how could he have known?

But he lost out on a few other properties. In fact, he suspected that several banks (which shall go unnamed for now) were making shady inside deals. In one case, Reid offered $650,000 on a property which had 15 other bidders. After the property was listed as “sold” for $500,000, it was placed back on the market in just a few weeks. But two weeks after its return to the market, the property sold for $750,000. It may be that someone had a friend at the bank, or it may be that the bank was in on the first deal. Either way, this furiously paced game of turnaround both excited and unnerved Reid, as he put down one failed offer after another.

No music this time, let me describe the sounds of my workplace…
Where nails on fingertips tap letters and mice make snaps, the backbeat rattles with political rhetoric and discussions of space. How light, sound, air and power effect people, work and productivity are our key concerns, and they shift our focus from the dry, incessant gust of a restroom fan in the distant, dry and airy background.
High windows and concrete ceilings draw in the low roar, clatter or sudden bursts of vehicle traffic below us as sound braves the building’s outer walls to seep into our line of hearing. Even the softest shoes click twice against the office’s exposed cement ground, and echo distantly downward into the building’s fourth, third, second and first floor… disappearing slowly into the structure’s ambient vibration. Even the lightest flick of paper from the far corner of our tall room launches oxygen atoms directionally, reverberating until lodged in mid-air somewhere in the vast, dense space of the room. A telephone rings and interrupts the incessant shattering of silence. One of seven potential voices speaks loudly enough to be noticed, but the atmosphere dampens others’ ability to hear the sounds emanating from the phone.
Clicks from the wide, still hallway. Three knocks at the door pulse inward and outward from their origin. Chairs shuffle as metal elements from within their frame tap against others, as plastic elements adjust in their place and springs uncoil the creak open. Now shoes crack hard against the concrete, launching a signal outward for two understood purposes: to alert those seated that the door is being attended to and to alert the person waiting that they would be addressed soon. A smooth metallic clack as the door is opened suddenly, and no sound at all at the opening of the door. Polite and seemingly enthusiastic “hellos” are exchanged at higher-than-usual tones as a company representative enters the office with shoes deliberately chosen to splinter the rigid floor in announcement.
And it works like a charm. My inner ear closes and opens as my head shifts upward at their presence. “It’s good to see you again,” I practically sing as my voice reverberates lowly and pleasantly in meter toward their ears. The A Capella chorus behind me echoes similar sentiments with a similarly sweet gauge over and through my body toward the doorway, and their crooning is met with bright, though deliberate smiles. A shrill, scraping rasp jars the low melodies of fans and charming hum of amiable dialogue as the steel conference table chairs grate against the floor cruelly.
“I’d like to show you our new carpet samples!” The cheery visitor chants steadily in a strangely energized tone of obligation. And, as architects, we listen intently as her tone lifts and drops, questions are answered lowly, tighten in pitch for clarifications, or slow in meter for situations more complicated.

And then the appraiser arrived. Although Rick was originally willing to purchase the loft at the price stated, the appraiser determined that it was worth significantly less than what the seller was asking. From that point forward, negotiating for a purchase would become a fool’s deal: if Rick wanted the place, he could only pay the seller’s outrageous asking price, knowing that his loft would be a huge financial loss. He had no other option: he backed out of the deal and fell out of escrow.

The Landscape shook anxiously as Night crawled over it’s precipice. “What will this change?” Emma asked nervously as the creature loomed atop the hillscape.
“Peer into my mouth,” and creature replied, “and you will see the wonders of a world in darkness…”
Emma stared into the surprising splendor, “Is this world the same as the one without light?”
The creature smiled widely as he enveloped the horizon around her, “Little Girl, inside of me lives a universe that can only be seen without the light of day.”

Le Corbusier stared down at the rendering in frustration as it dissolved into the ether. “Twelve times in a row?!” he groaned, scratching his head.
“You mustn’t conceive so far beyond the limits of your time!” The otherworldly voice once again boomed from the nexus.
Corbusier frowned and lowered his pen to start over again. “Oh shut up.”

Here’s where Trevor’s home-buying journey hit a brick wall: he couldn’t actually find a home. Like anyone in the market, he had a list in his mind of all of the things he wanted, and he told himself that he wouldn’t negotiate on any of them. So naturally, every new space came with its own set of frustrations when one of those things was missing, and between scouring websites, spending whole weekends with his agent, and sometimes driving around alone, months were spent searching in vain.

Something about drinking Neuronia was oddly alluring to Simon. He knew he was a decent computer programmer, but the Neuronia just seemed to make things easier. He was typing faster, made fewer mistakes, focused more naturally, more readily stepped into and out of more networks, more casually strolled through digital walls.
He promised the National program’s sub-director, General Salazar, that he would take it slow. One step at a time. But Simon could feel the integrated power of his abilities flowing through his fingers and into the world’s circuitous mainframe.
Simon refilled the Neuronia tank and peered through his computer screen to the network on the opposite side. ‘It was time to have a little fun… just to test myself and this network’s capabilities,’ he reasoned. ‘Besides, it’s just a little hacking… I won’t hurt anyone.’

My article this past week was a quick overview of a classic literary work by William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury, and how it relates to how we will see the conservative movement change in the coming years. Here’s an excerpt:
Everyone is fearful in their own way. Change is scary, and represents death: the death of a habit, the death of an idea, the death of a way of life. Despite that fear, some things you simply cannot argue with. Despite that fear, the world is going to change, whether you like it or not. The BP oil spill showed us that multinational corporations have the power to screw up the environment. It can happen, and has. WikiLeaks has shown us that our national security networks are not impenetrable. The Chinese economy has shown us that we are not the only economic superpower in the world. The Catholic Church has shown us that faith-based institutions can lie to you on a horrific, disgusting scale.

Gina tried her best to appear nonchalant. She’d finish her cigarette and make an excuse to leave, she worried. Something was wrong with him.
